In this talk I will present the debate between Descriptivism and Singularism and argue in favour of Singularism. Descriptivism is the view that our mental relation to individual objects goes through properties of those objects. What is given to us are, first and foremost, properties whose worldly instantiation we are able to detect, and only indirectly objects. In contrast, Singularism holds that our thought is about individual objects as much as it is about properties. Objects are given to us directly, in experience, and we do not necessarily think of them as the bearers of such and such properties. To characterize the (non-descriptive) ways we think of objects when they are given directly in experience, I will introduce the notion of a mental file.
